Uhlenberg Wins Another Trophy
13th November 2014

Blair Uhlenberg won the Adult Ministock City of New Plymouth Classic on Saturday 8th November.

Current Taranaki Adult Ministock champion Blair Uhlenberg added another trophy to his cabinet when he won the City of New Plymouth Classic for the class at Stratford Speedway on Saturday November 8th in front of a very large crowd, who were still coming into the venue after the 7pm start time.  Uhlenberg outpaced and out drove his rivals in the twenty three car field, finishing third in race one from a grid twelve start, winning race two from grid one and then finishing ninth in race three from grid twenty one to win the title by just one point from Carol Podjursky and Josh Evershed who were tied on points.  Podjursky was leading by one point after two races but lost vital ground when Uhlenberg passed her with just two laps to go in the third race.  Podjursky beat Evershed in a four lap run off to claim second place, notching up one for the girls along the way.  Defending champion Hamish Booker finished fifth while Sister Nicole drove her car into the wall during the third race when her steering broke.  All three drivers on the podium are graduates from Youth Ministocks, proving the value of the class as a training ground.  Podjursky was the most recent to move up to the Adult Class, doing so at the start of this racing season.

A large field of Superstocks were again on hand and provided close racing with a few thrills and spills thrown in for good measure, including in the first race when Palmerston North contracted driver Richard Hart required the help of a tractor to remove him from his perching position on the bonnet of Paul Johnsons car after he was sandwiched between both Johnson and Shane Hurley and a double roll over in the last race of the night when Brent Boniface and Bruce Williams, who was driving Mike Fale’s car tangled and rolled simultaneously in turn four.  The rollover was a first for Williams, who had never been upside down prior in his racing career while it was the first meeting of the season for Boniface in his newly purchased car.  Williams had earlier won the first race of the night in his own car.  Wayne Moss won race two, after leading the entire duration from a grid one start while Carl Shearer won race three from a front row start and then carved his way through the field to win race four.

Twenty Stockcars faced the starter for their first race of the night of which Bevan Phillips looked a likely winner.  Phillips led for the first few laps of the race before clouting the wall on the slippery track and losing engine power.  Shane Hurliman took over the lead momentarily before Mark Duthie made a pass and stayed at the front of the field for the remainder of the race.  Haydin Barker won race two after passing initial leaders Wilson Gargan and Hurliman with just three laps to go.  Mark Woods won race three and Tyler Walker claimed victory in race four, making it to the font of the pack on the last lap.  Shane Hurliman was the bridesmaid most of the night, placing second in the first three races before being a non starter in race four.

The Saloon car class provided some entertaining racing for the crowd with more crashes than there should be in a non contact class.  Both Russell Gorrie and John Young had a shortened first race after suffering damage from a multi car pileup when Jon Ingram’s car lost power and stopped at the entry to turn four.  Richard Dreaver rode the wall in spectacular style in race three while Young did the same soon after on the restart.  Paula Hinton drove a tidy race to take the first chequered flag of the night for the class in race one while Craig Korff won race two and Ash Cook cruised to victory in race three.
