Rain affects opening night racing
15th November 2016

Rain cuts into race meeting.  Only two thirds completed.

Rain affects opening night racing

The three events that were on the race card at Stratford Speedway’s opening night meeting needed to be re-run after a heavy rain shower two thirds of the way through the meeting forced organisers to pull the pin and cancel the remaining races.  Prior to the rain shower the new track surface had been holding up well and appeared to be providing good drive to the competitors while the new forty five degree angled lip on the bottom of the wall also appeared to be doing its job after two Saloon competitors ran wide and clipped the wall.  They were able to drive away and continue racing.

The races that were held were fast and mostly clean, even in the Stockcar and Superstock classes where no one has yet attempted to try out the rolling capacity of the new lip.

Josh Walsh was having an excellent night, winning the first Stockcar race after making his way to the front of the field on the opening lap from a grid five start, passing initial leader Thomas Meyer.  Once at the front Walsh never looked back and second place finisher Bevan Phillips never got close enough to challenge for the lead while former Saloon racer Russell Gorrie picked up a good third place in his new class.  Kylee Symes won race two ahead of Mark Woods and Walsh.  Gorrie was again running well in this race but failed to finish after he became wedged on the side of Lawrence Barr’s car and then broke an axle.  Walsh was the point’s leader and would have been eyeing up a spot on the podium heading into the third race, had it been held.

Thomas Korff grabbed a good first race win in the Saloon class.  Joe Ingram led the race for the first two laps but Korff had a better car set up for the slightly slippery conditions and made a pass up the inside of Ingram through turns one and two when Ingram ran wide.  Hawkes Bay driver Josh Smith picked up a good win in race two.  Paula Hinton had got the jump at the race start but Smith passed her through the inside of turn two before clearing out in front and collecting the chequered flag.

Regular frontrunner Duane Hickman dominated the racing in the Midget class, collecting two wins from two races.  Hickman propelled his way through the nine car field with ease from a grid six start and began challenging race leader Dayne Maxwell on lap three before making the race winning pass at the completion of lap five, incidentally the lap that he set the fastest time of the race on, 14.6 seconds.  Hickman led race two for the entire duration, finishing four seconds clear of second place finisher, Ricky McGough from Auckland.

Just one Superstock race was completed before the rain arrived.  Carl Shearer cruised to victory in his new car after making his way to the front of the field in the opening lap.  Mark Phipps had his car dialled in and was fast, at times making ground on shearer and collecting a solid second place ahead of Phil Ogle.

Like the Superstock class, the Minisprints also only got one race completed.  Shaun Dickie was ridiculously quick and won the race by over half a lap from Karl Uhlenberg.  To be fair, Uhlenberg did come close to matching Dickie for speed after he managed to get past Kurt Phillips for second place.

Youth Ministock competitors completed two races.  Brad Uhlenberg won the first race convincingly from William Hughes while Flynn Johnson was the victor in race two.
