Keegan Levien top driver at Championship

After two nights of rugged Stockcar racing, Wellington driver Keegan Levien has emerged as the 2017/18 New Zealand Stockcar Grand Prix Champion.  Levien qualified fifth in his group on Friday night before turning things up a notch to perform extremely well in Saturday’s three races.

A great drive in the first race saw Levien move up a large number of places after starting in grid twenty six to come home in eighth place before winning race two from grid eleven.  Starting in grid nine for the third and final race, Levien kept his nose clean, seemed to have plenty of support from neighbouring tracks competitors, survived a late race attack from Stratford driver Bevan Phillips and finished in second place giving him a total points score of eighty two and the overall victory.  Palmerston North competitor Roydon Winstanley was second overall, a huge eleven point’s gap between the pair while Hawkes Bay racer Brandon Symes claimed the third spot, just one point behind Winstanley.

Despite making up a third of the field, Stratford based competitors couldn’t quite get to the podium, the closest being Rowan Urlich who won the third race and finished fourth overall, one point behind Symes.

The second tier event, the King of the Mountain Champs, was won by another Wellington competitor – Todd McLachlan.  McLachlan recorded tow second places and a sixth over the night to win the event by a good margin from New Zealand number two, Dion Mooney from Wanganui.  Hawkes Bay driver Regan Penn was third.

The racing over the two nights was excellent with a good amount of contact during the qualifying on Friday and again during the finals for both the PGG Wrightson Hawera New Zealand Stockcar Grand Prix and the Sentry Hill Motel King of the Mountain Champs.  The third heats in both groups generated plenty of action, in particular the GP finals which looked like a Stratford vs everyone else teams race.

Kettle Handyman Services had sponsored $400 for the best stirrer and this was awarded to Huntly driver Dave Moore for his efforts over both nights of racing.

Overall the meeting provided some good old fashion Stockcar racing and all the drivers should be commended for their efforts.

The Superstock teams race between the Stratford Scrappers and the Waikato Wanderers was well worth the watch with both teams putting on a good show.  Carl Shearer was the initial leader for the Scrappers until he was slowed by one of the Wanderers members on lap six.  Hamish Booker (Scrappers) took over the running at the front of the field with Waikato’s Jared Wade in hot pursuit.  Some brilliant blocking by Mitch Vickery halted the Wanderers progress enough to allow Booker to keep his place at the front and cross under the checkered flag first for a local victory in front of an appreciative crowd.

Lydia Dickinson won the Taranaki Minisprint Champs by two points from her team mate Shaun Dickie.  Dickinson never carried the checkered flag all night but was consistent in her racing with a third and two second places.  Dickie won two races but finished well down the fourteen car field in the other.  Karl Uhlenberg came home in third place, one point behind Dickie.
